| Escapee captured in Woodbury
A man who escaped the custody of a bail bondsman Tuesday evening eluded city police for about 30 minutes before being captured in a wooded area behind the Gloucester County Jail. Three of the suspect's friends were also apprehended and charged with trying to help him escape, police said. Harold Gotts, 22, of Barrington, was wanted for a string of traffic violations and a drug possession charge in Washington Township, Woodbury police Lt. Stephen Cope said. Bail bondsman Antonio Roman captured Gotts and brought him to Woodbury to be arrested Tuesday. When Roman opened the door of his car to get Gotts out, Gotts kicked the door into Roman and escaped on foot, Cope said. Gotts was handcuffed with his hands in front of his body, Cope said. Three friends of Gotts, Lauren Lupo, 23, of Barrington, Daniel Nevius, 26, of Gloucester City, and Matthew Soloman, 20, of Gloucester Township, tailed Roman while he was transporting Gotts, Cope said.
Fatal hunting incident
A hunting incident in Cayuga County Friday leaves a Cortland man dead and his uncle facing a homicide charge. Cayuga County Sheriff's deputies say it happened at approximately 7:15 a.m. on Salt Road in the Town of Summerhill. The Cayuga County 911 center received a call at 7:46 in the morning saying a hunter had been shot. Emergency Medical Services and Sheriff's Deputies responded to a wooded area approximately one mile south of Filmore Road and found the body of Ricky A. Huffman, 33. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Deputies say Huffman was deer hunting with Michael A. Hall, 49, on family owned property when he was shot by Hall. Huffman was wearing camouflage clothing and an orange knit hat. Hall was arraigned on a charge of criminally negligent homicide and is jailed on $10,000 cash bail or $20,000 bond.
Man allegedly takes 70 lbs of quarters
A former employee of a car wash has been accused of taking more than 70 pounds of quarters from cash machines at the business. Scott Schmitz, 40, of Fond du Lac faces charges of burglary, theft, criminal damage to property and bail jumping in the case He is accused of breaking into Buggy Bath Car Wash during overnight hours Nov. 2 and stealing 5,619 quarters worth about $1,400 and $1,000 in bills from cash machines at the business, according to a Fond du Lac Police Department report. The owner, Eric Morse, told police that whoever burglarized the car wash did it at the perfect time since the cash machines had just been stocked, according to the report. A $500 cash bond was set during Schmitz's initial court appearance Friday, and a preliminary hearing was scheduled on Dec.
Suspect Arrested in Durham Man's Slaying
A suspect in the slaying of a 89-year-old Bragtown man turned himself in on Monday evening, Durham County Sheriff Worth L. Hill announced. Last Friday, the sheriff's office swore out warrants against Tory Jarel Nelson, 18, of 5121 Stanley Road, for the murder of Charles Forest Davis, who was found dead in his home at 2913 Nellowood St. on Sept. 26. Nelson turned himself into Barry Jones, of Barry Bail Bonds Inc., at 6 p.m. He was then transported to the Durham County magistrate's office, where detectives met him. Nelson was charged with first-degree murder, breaking and entering larceny and larceny of a motor vehicle. Authorities said other arrests in the case are pending. Detectives said Nelson had been a focus of the investigation from the start, but they did not release a picture of him and call him a person of interest until two weeks ago.
Fodder scam convict gets bail
New Delhi, Nov 19: The Supreme Court today granted bail to a multi-crore fodder scam convict who was sentenced to three years' imprisonment by a trial court in Jharkhand. Brajesh Kumar Sinha, a medicine supplier held guilty of cheating and forgery, was granted bail by a bench comprising Justices A K Mathur and Markandey Katju which considered his submission that he had already undergone imprisonment for one year. Sinha's counsel Brajesh Kumar said the bench should consider his bail plea as even the designated CBI court in Ranchi, while convicting him, had taken a lenient view that the accused was only 19 years old and had acted under the guidance of his elder family members who were directly associated with the business. The bench accepted the submission of Kumar and directed the convict to furnish a personal bail bond of Rs 10,000 and a surety of equal amount.
Putnam Lake shooter remains in jail; services set for victim
CARMEL - Peter Guerriero, charged with manslaughter in the shooting death of a man he thought was trying to break into his Putnam Lake home, remains in the Putnam County jail this morning in lieu of $250,000 cash bail or bond, corrections officer said. Guerriero, 42, of 56 Empire Drive, was charged by state police with second-degree manslaughter and criminal use of a firearm, felonies, in the 3 a.m. shooting Monday of 32-year-old David Shachnow, of Southeast, outside Guerriero's home. Guerriero was arraigned yesterday in Patterson Justice Court and pleaded not guilty to the charges. He was then sent to jail on the bail, which was recommended by Assistant District Attorney Mary Jane MacCrae and set by Town Justice Roger Tricinelli. Guerriero is due back in court Friday at 10 a.m.
Two charged in Tioga County home burglary
An 18-year-old Richford youth is charged with two felony counts in the theft of an automobile and then entering a residence and stealing a purse for which a Berkshire teenager is also charged with a felony. Justin M. Cornell, 18, of Hunts Corner Road, Richford, was charged Sunday by the Tioga County Sheriff's Office with fourth-degree grand larceny and second-degree burglary, both felonies; and Keith R. Ward, 18, of Wilson Creek Road, Berkshire, was charged with second-degree burglary, a felony, according to Tioga County Sheriff Gary W. Howard. Both were remanded to the Tioga County Jail in the Town of Owego in lieu of $10,000 cash bail or $210,000 bond. Cornwell was charged following an investigation in which he is alleged to have stolen a motor vehicle from Spring Street in Newark Valley and then along with Ward entered a residence on Elm Street in Newark Valley, according to the Tioga County Sheriff's Office.
